When a drain or sewer line fails underground, the traditional fix has always meant digging. Tearing up the yard, cutting through the driveway, breaking into the concrete slab — whatever it takes to reach the damaged pipe. It’s disruptive, expensive, and leaves the property in rough shape long after the plumbing is actually fixed.

Pipe relining offers a different approach. Instead of excavating to reach the pipe, a licensed plumber rehabilitates it from the inside — inserting a liner, pressing it against the pipe wall, and curing it in place to create a new pipe within the existing one. No trenches. Minimal disruption. For the right candidate, it’s faster and significantly less invasive than traditional repair.

Here’s exactly how the process works.

The Method: Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) Lining

The most common residential pipe relining method is Cured-In-Place Pipe lining, known as CIPP. The name describes what happens: a resin-saturated liner is inserted into the damaged pipe, pressed against the interior wall, and cured in place until it hardens into a smooth, structurally independent surface. The result is a new pipe inside the old one.

Here’s how it works from start to finish.

Step 1: Camera Inspection

The process begins with a high-definition camera inspection of the affected pipe. A licensed plumber runs a camera through the line to assess exactly what’s there — cracks, root intrusion, corrosion, joint separation, or sections that have shifted or partially collapsed. This inspection is what determines whether the pipe is a viable candidate for relining or needs a different approach.

No reputable contractor should begin relining work without this step. The camera inspection is what makes an honest recommendation possible.

Step 2: Hydro Jetting

Before the liner goes in, the pipe is cleaned. High-pressure hydro jetting clears scale buildup, grease deposits, root debris, and corrosion from the interior wall. A liner installed over a dirty surface won’t bond correctly and won’t cure to a smooth, consistent finish. The cleaning step is not optional.

Step 3: Liner Installation

A felt or fiberglass liner saturated with epoxy resin is inserted into the pipe through an existing access point — typically a cleanout, a small excavation at one end of the run, or in some cases through a fixture opening. The liner is pulled or pushed into position to cover the full length of the damaged section.

Step 4: Inflation and Curing

An inflatable bladder is inserted inside the liner and inflated, pressing the resin-saturated liner firmly against the interior pipe wall. The resin then cures — hardening into a rigid, seamless surface bonded to the host pipe. Curing can be accomplished through ambient temperature, steam, hot water, or UV light depending on the liner system and the contractor’s equipment.

Once curing is complete, the bladder is deflated and removed. The liner stays.

Step 5: Final Camera Inspection

A post-installation camera inspection confirms the liner has cured correctly, is properly seated against the pipe wall, and that any lateral connections — branch lines feeding into the main run — haven’t been inadvertently blocked by the liner material. This inspection is the quality check that closes out the job.

What You End Up With

The finished CIPP liner is a smooth, seamless interior surface rated for 50 years or more of service life. It is resistant to the root intrusion, corrosion, and soil movement stress that damaged the original pipe. Lateral connections are reinstated during or after installation.

The host pipe — the original cast iron, clay, or other material — remains in place. The liner is not a patch. It’s a structurally independent pipe that happens to be installed inside the old one.
